Sioux Falls was hit with a devastating tornado on Tuesday, September 10th. The tornado had wind speeds reaching up to 125 mph and was said to have touched down at 11:28 p.m. It wreaked significant damage on 41st street, touching down on the ground for around one mile and had an estimated width of 75 yards.

The tornado developed toward the beginning of the storm which is less typical for a tornado and one of the reasons why it was so hard to detect and predict. Tornados can be hard disasters to handle and they can do serious damage to your home’s exterior. Our roofing contractors Sioux Falls SD want to help you be better prepared and outline the steps that should happen after a tornado hits.

Be Prepared

Living in a place known as tornado alley, it is important to think about getting storm windows and doors. Storm windows and doors are built to handle high winds and better insulates your home. They handle high winds better and  are also more resistant to flying debris and hail that accompanies tornadoes. This is why these products can be a lifesaver when a tornado hits. You also want to be familiar with what the warning signs are. Most tornadoes will develop during supercell thunderstorms and are caused by the winds being blown in multiple directions and warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air.

After the Storm

Once you are sure the storm has safely passed and it is okay to leave your place of safety, it is time to take stock of the damage. Check around your yard for fallen trees or flying debris that could have damaged your exterior. Check your windows for broken glass or damaged sills that could let water in. Look to see if your siding has any denting or got torn off with the high winds.

Our LoveOurRoof roofing contractors Sioux Falls SD recommend keeping a list of things that need to be repaired or replaced so that you do not lose track. The most important thing is to take pictures of it all for insurance purposes and to also call a professional roofing contractors Sioux Falls SD  to come and have your home inspected, regardless of the extent of damage, but especially if your home was severely harmed.

Be wary of Storm Chasers

Another thing that needs to be done after a big storm like a tornado is to be wary of storm chasers. Storm chasers are out of towners that track storms to try and take advantage of homeowners after a disaster strikes. They often do not have the proper licensing, do shoddy work and leave town as soon as they can.

It is a good idea to be wary of contractors that are selling their services door-to-door. The Better Business Bureau also recommends resisting someone who is trying to pressure you into their services by promising a “good deal.” Homeowners should get estimates, do research on local and credited companies and get everything in writing.
